Wondering Why You Have Sensitive Teeth? Why Teeth Are Sensitive

The more a person knows about his or her oral health, the better off he or she is when it comes to good overall health. For anyone experiencing sensitivity in one or more of his or her teeth, there is definitely a reason for why this is happening. Although it could be a temporary sensitivity problem, it could also be an ongoing sensitivity problem. The right thing for someone to do is to find out why he or she is experiencing this sensitivity to address the issue.

Tooth sensitivity causes and treatment

The main causes or triggers of tooth sensitivity include drinking drinks or eating food that is very hot or very cold, eating or drinking things that are extremely sweet or acidic foods, breathing in cold air, brushing teeth, flossing teeth and using alcohol-based mouthwashes or rinses. Tooth sensitivity treatment options are available and the treatment option necessary will depend on the reason why the person is experiencing tooth sensitivity in the first place.

Why teeth are sensitive

There are various reasons why someone will receive a sensitive teeth diagnosis. Some people have more sensitive teeth because they do not have as much enamel on their teeth as others do. Other reasons why people may receive a sensitive teeth diagnosis includes brushing of the teeth too hard, using a hard-bristled toothbrush instead of a soft-bristled toothbrush and bruxism. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, occurs during the day or when a person is sleeping at night.

Damaged teeth are also a common reason why someone experiences tooth sensitivity. When a tooth has pieces missing, is broke or is worn down, it is much more susceptible to injury. These types of tooth damages can leave the dentin of the tooth or the tooth’s root exposed, which is going to cause various levels of sensitivity.

It is likely that some patients will experience their teeth being more sensitive after having a dental procedure performed like fillings, crowns or teeth whitening procedure. If this happens to be the case, it is likely that the sensitivity of the tooth will return in a few days.
